Numbers in the news

The numbers in the news that caught my attention today are 83, 65, and 1.

According to 2007 federal statistics, 83 percent of parents who home-school their children want to give their kids religious instruction. That's not too surprising, and as a result the biology textbooks that are published for the home-schooling market are heavy on creationism and critical of Darwinian evolutionary theory. One of the best-selling biology textbooks is called Exploring Creation, is published by Apologia Educational Ministries, and retails for 65 bucks. What's the old saying about a fool and his money ?

The U.S. Census Bureau is under criticism as usual. This time the criticism is coming from someone other than Republicans of the teabag variety. The critic is a woman named Eiler, the one person who resides in Monowi, Nebraska. The census report is showing there are two people in Monowi, and Eiler is pissed off about it. Apparently, there are a few other towns with several people that are being reported as "Population: 1." Can't the damned government do anything right ?
