Still here

It's May 22nd, nearly May 23rd, and I'm still here. The Rapture and related life-changing events didn't happen. I'm not surprised, but those fucking losers who gave away all their possessions and emptied out their bank accounts are into some DEEP rationalization tonight. Meanwhile, the old saying about the parting of fools and their money is again proven true.

Did he say what I think he said ?

I've been trying to keep an eye on the financial woes the Big Three U.S. automakers are experiencing. There's one school of thought indicating if all three go down, the total impact on the overall economy will be devastating. The other school of thought, held by most Republicans, is that it's far more important to bust the labor unions than rescue the organizations with bailout money. Apparently, the Repubs haven't read about the first school of thought, don't believe it, or don't give a flying fuck.

Anyway, an article in today's local newspaper quotes W as saying he wants to settle the issue because he doesn't want to leave a mess for President Obama. Whaaaaa--- ? This has to go into the books as one of the most incredibly dumbass things that have come out of that fool's mouth, and there've been a slew of 'em.

Another trillion and nothing to show for it ?

The reasons for the current financial crisis and the proposed solutions are too complicated for me to easily comprehend. I hope that eventually I'll understand why the same people who caused the problem are being allowed to write the rules for the solution.

Goober's presidency has been one damned crisis after another; trouble follows this hole around like a puppy following its mother. Every time a crisis erupts, Goober responds by ramming some half-assed program through Congress which is how we get shit like the so-called Patriot Act and virtually all the other bad laws passed since 2001. The current plan has provisions that should kill the deal but probably won't. If the Dems had any courage, they'd hit the brakes and think this whole thing through, but unfortunately can't be relied upon to do it. Maybe the Repubs will take the initiative and bring this mess to a halt, at least long enough to clean out the nastiest parts of the plan. Once again, I'll be hoping for the best and expecting the worst.

Added 2:26 pm: Just read in USA Today that Cheney is meeting with GOP congressfolks to stress the urgency of passing Goober's plan. He's telling them it's absolutely the right thing to do, and must be done without delay. Cheney being out in front on something = flashing warning lights and sirens blaring. Don't do it !!!!

Weekend updates (updated)

There should have been some kind of public health advisory yesterday, but if there was, I missed it. Rick Hairgod Perry, Little Dick Cheney, and Karl Rove were all in town to attend a ceremony paying tribute to the late Anne Armstrong. I thought I noticed an unusual amount of pollution in the air, but it was only the massive concentration of conservative toxicity and nastiness at the big school a few miles down the road.

Jorge, a man for whom the description singularly ungifted might have been invented, has one talent: he likes to make up nicknames for everybody. He thinks it's clever, and so do his admirers. Members of his administration, the White House press corps, and other heads of state have all been beneficiaries of this exercise in juvenile behavior. Russian president Vladimir Putin is known as Pootie-Poot, although Vlad the Impaler might've been more appropriate, since he's as serious as a bloodstain on the wall.

As most people know by now, Pootie-Poot hasn't been on his best behavior lately, and Jorge is so mad he could just stamp his foot. He's been threatening the Pooter with all kinds of repercussions; in fact, he practically guaranteed Pooter won't be getting an invitation to the next big barbeque at Crawford. Jorge's a tough guy who means business, and don't you forget it.

Added 4:28 pm on Saturday: A few conservative blogs are getting a laugh out of reports that Obama's staff told Wes Clark his attendance at the Dem convention will NOT be necessary. If this is true, and if the facts match the superficial appearances, it's another reason not to be sad over Obama's approaching demolition by the Speedo McCain juggernaut. Wes Clark is the only remaining Democrat who hasn't given me a reason to hate him (yet), and he doesn't deserve shabby treatment by the party featherweights.

Pinball

There've been several polls recently showing that about 80 percent of the American people think the country is headed in the wrong direction. Allowing for the usual 2 percent who are too oblivious to hold an opinion on the subject, this indicates that about 18 percent of Americans believe we're on the right track. I think I know who those people are, but I'm not sure I know any of them personally. That's probably a good thing.

Jorge's approval rating is still about 30 percent, so if my math is accurate, approximately 12 percent of the people who think America is on the wrong track still think Jorge's doing a damned good job. Those are the people I want to meet sometime.

When I was a kid in school, I took civics classes. Sometimes they were called social studies. I don't know if those are still offered in public schools anymore, but they should be. One thing I remember is that the constitution established a federal government based on a system of checks and balances, with the three branches all keeping an eye on each other and each having some ability to limit the power of the other two. That's the stuff they used to teach, or at least it's the way I remember it.

When serious historical analyses of Jorge's two terms are written, chapters will be devoted to the role that Cheney and others played in expanding presidential power and eliminating the checks-and-balances, and how the other branches let it happen. There's been an absence of executive accountability under the traditional rules that staggers the imagination, and the horrors we already know about are probably just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. The ultimate irony is that Jorge is the last guy on earth you'd want to entrust with absolute power and authority.

I saw an article yesterday about the massive corruption in Iraq: millions, probably billions, of dollars being wasted with contractors like Halliburton and KBR ripping us off as fast as they can think up the schemes. Cans of soda pop at 45 dollars each, that kind of thing. Incredible. Is anybody ever going to be assigned the responsibility for this mess and punished for it ? I'm not counting on it.

Conservatives like to justify Jorge's reign of error by pointing out that since 911, there hasn't been another comparable event. Maybe the terrorists have decided that America's doing such a fine job of self-destruction they can save their ammo.

Just when I thought it was safe....

Like the shark in Jaws for roughly the first hour of the movie, brother Jeb has been silently swimming the political sea, unseen but never completely out of mind. All that's missing is the ominous score by John Williams to remind us that soon, some innocent nude swimmer may become dinner. If America's fortunate, Jorge will have done enough damage that no one with the Bush surname can ever be elected to any office again. There are enough bad news Republicans around without having to worry about Jeb.

The one (and only) time I agree

The headline above the fold in yesterday's local newspaper: Bush says Dems let people down.

Without reading the article to see what idiotic remarks that damned fool actually made, I agree with his premise in the headline. The Dems did let the people down. Bush should have been arrested, indicted, tried, convicted, and placed in the stocks for 6 months in a public square so that he could be pelted with rotten fruits and vegetables. That would be the bare minimum he deserves. The fact he still gets to sit around the White House picking his nose is a tremendous disservice to the American people.

The Decider, now The Definer

The front page headline in today's local paper: "Bush defines terms for peace in Mideast."

This guy would have trouble defining the term homo sapiens, but he's going to fix a problem that has resisted the best efforts of many better men than him. Yeah, right.

Run, clock, run.
