As a rule of thumb, I don't have any use for conservative Republicans or Texas Longhorn fans. I knew a guy once who was both; he was a nice guy, so I guess I can't make a sweeping generalization on this topic.
Anyway, I bring this up after seeing the Austin American Statesman website this morning. Mack Brown just hired Major Applewhite to coach running backs, and apparently this has created a near-orgasmic frenzy among the orangebloods. Based on the W-L records of the teams Applewhite has coached, I'm not exactly sure what all the excitement is about.
It occurs to me this is an example of something conservatives and teasips have in common: they love their icons. Applewhite and D.K. Royal are icons at the 40 acres, and among Republicans, Reagan is the definitive icon (the Rs would still have him propped up behind the podium if they could).
Both groups are always trying to recapture what they consider their glorious past, while the rest of us get bored watching them.
