Outta here

Today's OMFG moment in sports involves Johnny (Football) Manziel and his smart phone. Again. Do we see a hint that 2013 is the end of the line at TAMU?

Manziel learned in the eleven games the Aggies won last season that on a football field, he can get away with just about anything. As a college quarterback, he's as talented as anyone I've ever seen, and he has a gift for turning chickenshit into chicken salad.

It's not that easy in the rest of his world. If they awarded trophies for mature judgment, prudence, and exceptional social skills, Johnny Football wouldn't make the list of finalists. He's been a celebrity long enough now that he should know spouting off the first thing that crosses his mind will attract attention, and usually not the good kind.

The way things work, Manziel will get by with a lot of stuff because he wins games and looks sensational doing it. The people who put him on his pedestal in the first place will keep him there as long as he beats the Tide and LSU, and won't worry much about his off-field behavior. On the other hand, they probably won't be willing to look the other way if he hits a slump or a losing streak. JFF may quickly discover that the usual rules DO apply to him after all.

Added 6:06 PM, Wednesday 19 June:

It turns out that Manziel was issued a parking ticket, provoking public venting on Twitter about his eagerness to get the hell outta town. I would have been just as pissed off if I'd gotten the citation, but since I don't tweet, only about 2-3 people would know, and none of them would give a fuck. Anyway, I've been reading online comments triggered by the incident, and there are plenty of people around whose reactions range from (A) lack of sympathy, to (B) hatred for Manziel, his family, and everybody who ever attended A&M. A lot of comments from teasips who can't wait for him to leave, too. Fuck 'em.
