Reading this article in the Austin paper brought back memories, and reminded me of the reasons why I still have bad dreams about my working years. Every problem discussed in the story is something I've experienced, hands on, on a much smaller scale. The shit going on today is 10-12 times worse than my worst year ever. I bailed out of my public service career in 1998, before the Titanic hit the iceberg, but at a point in time when it was obvious that G.W. Bush, then governor of Texas, had steered toward it and wasn't about to reverse course. The s.o.b. just loved the sound of breaking glass. Did then, still does.
The bottom line is, the goddamned Republicans took a perfectly good state agency that was administering an important program effectively, and smashed the sumbitch. Now they're beginning to mumble about taking back America. They haven't finished destroying the institutions of this society, and it's driving the motherfuckers crazy.
