I've been exchanging e-mails with my bro in Houston on the issue of health care reform, and his most recent words on the matter brought a thought to mind.
The best movie I've seen in the last two years or so is No Country For Old Men, based on the excellent novel by Cormac McCarthy which I read as well. The very best line in the movie, which includes many great ones, was taken directly from the book and sums up my feelings on the current political situation better than anything I can come up with on my own.
For those who haven't read the book or seen the movie, the setup is this: A Texas lawman (Tommy Lee Jones) and his deputy are examining a crime scene -- a drug deal gone bad, as they say. There are trucks, dogs, and men all around and all are full of bullet holes. The buzzing of flies can be heard on the film soundtrack.
The deputy says, "It's a mess ain't it, Sheriff."
Tommy Lee replies, "If it ain't, it'll do till a mess gets here."
Considering the tea bag movement, the birther movement, the bailouts, and the botch being made of health care reform by Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats, we've got a real mess going, or something that will pass for one for the time being.
