Q NOTES # 371: Special Snowflakes

Gov. Asa Hutchinson plans to end the statewide mask mandate in Arkansas, and apparently believes it's a good idea to let common sense replace rules. This is probably a case of the governor saying something that sounds nice to rationalize a bad decision: People in Arkansas understand the importance of masks in controlling the microbes from hell, and will continue to wear masks appropriately without government requirements.

Hutchinson is probably overestimating the ability of residents in his state to think intelligently.

Texas had a mask mandate until recently, and while it was in effect, I could shop at Walmart with confidence, knowing that virtually everybody in the place would be masked, and I could easily maintain a safe distance from the 1 or 2 who weren't on any given day.

This morning, I made an early trip to Walmart. Since it was before 9:30 AM on Sunday, the number of shoppers was about a third of what I normally encounter, but I saw five guys without masks. All of them looked like they fit the Privileged White Male stereotype I've been reading about: middle-aged white guys who believe inconvenient social norms never apply to them. In addition to the five white guys, I also spotted one unmasked young white woman who looked like she might've participated in the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol.

The bottom line: The majority of the people (shoppers and staff) in the store this morning were wearing their masks, but a greater percentage of the total weren't (based on my personal observation and experience). Enough people refusing to wear masks and/or be vaccinated spells trouble for us rule-followers.

Did you know that Porky Prick's personal passenger jet plane is out of commission and he can't afford to get it fixed enough to fly? He's pathetic.
