My Football Metaphor

As I read through the piss-and-moan comments from Democrats who seem to dislike Madam Speaker and Robert Mueller as much as they dislike Donny Stink Eye, Booger Barr and Moscow Mitch, it occurs to me that sometimes politics is like football.

Last November, Texas A&M played LSU in the final game of the regular season. The Aggies had not beaten LSU since joining the SEC, and needed a win badly. LSU made enough mistakes, and A&M made enough sensational plays, that the teams were tied 31-31 at the end of regulation. That pattern continued in overtime, and the teams remained tied until A&M finally won the game 74-72 on the final play of the seventh OT period. The damned game lasted nearly five hours, but the Aggies won because they kept the score close for as long as it took to finally get the W.

In this game, Madam Speaker and her House (D)'s are an underdog against Stink Eye and the Senate (R)'s led by Moscow Mitch. Like Texas A&M, they'll need a combination of mistakes by Donny and Mitch plus some sensational plays of their own to keep the score close, and getting the win may take one OT period after another. The key is to stay patient and not throw the ball up for an easy interception.
