Texas U has officially replaced Old Mack the Knife with Charlie Strong, who got attention with his success at Louisville. This has the smell of a panic hire, after all the big names on the longhorn wish list made it obvious they didn't consider the forty acres to be the premier destination in college football, although Texas U fans still believe it is.
So TU hired the best coach they could have hired. Not the best coach, just the best one who was interested in their vacancy, and one who might cut into Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin "advantage" in recruiting. Recent history suggests that when a successful coach has to be replaced, it almost always takes two or three changes before the next big success is located and hired. Some examples are programs that won national championships like Miami, Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Alabama, Florida State, Florida, and Tennessee. Hell, look what Texas U went through between the national championships won by Royal and Old Mack the Knife.
So excuse me for thinking Charlie Strong has the potential to be the longhorn version of Dennis Franchione. The orangebloods are already predicting multiple championships under his leadership; if it happens, it will be a rare exception to the usual pattern. LSU was another rare exception.
