In the old days, Notre Dame was famous for its powerhouse football team. Now the school is getting into the newspapers because Barry Obama was invited to address the spring commencement ceremony, and maybe pick up an honorary degree. This has the anti-abortion crazies in the Catholic church all worked up, making big mountains out of small molehills.
My interest in the abortion issue is purely theoretical, but I tend to agree with what I believe Obama's position to be. Basically, I'm pro-choice. If there was never another abortion performed, it would suit me if the individual decisions of women carrying embryos led to that outcome.
My problem with the anti-abortion people is that so many of them vote on the basis of that single issue, and for years they've been keeping Republicans in office hoping the practice will be abolished. I'm convinced that single-issue anti-abortion voters ultimately gave us eight years of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and everything that happened as a result.
