Fun with numbers for Monday

There's an article in the Houston Chronicle this morning about the costs of the Iraq war, which are apparently increasing even though we won according to all the conservatives on Fox News and the radio. The article says the war is expected to cost 12 billion dollars per month in 2008, based on reasonable (rather than worst-case) scenarios.

To put that estimate in a context someone like me can relate to, using numbers that are rounded to the nearest dollar: Twelve billion per month is 2.77 billion per week, or 395,908,941 dollars per day, or 16,496,206 per hour, or 274,936 per minute. Here's how I get my mind around the cost of the war: One minute of it costs 4.9 times as much as my household's entire gross income in 2007. I'd be happy to get a check from Uncle Sam for the 16.5 million dollars that one hour costs.
