Rafael's Rural, Reactionary, Religious Republicans

A letter to the editor from a guy named Fred in one of the larger Texas newspapers discussed the presidential campaign, post-Iowa caucus. I posted this reply:

"Fred ~~~~ makes a point that Rafael (Ted) Cruz, who has focused his campaign almost exclusively on appeals to conservative evangelical Christians, should prosper in the southeastern states that hold primaries on Super Tuesday.

Are southern states dominated by religious fundamentalists because the people are largely rural and reactionary, or is it the other way around? Are they backward because of their religious beliefs, or are they religious because they're backward?  In either case, the percentages indicate that there may be enough rural, reactionary, religious Republicans to help Rafael win the party nomination. What is less certain is whether there are enough of them outside the former Confederacy to win a national election."
