As a famous TV personality and a skilled huckster, Trump realized that he could create a media circus by telling those people exactly what they want to hear --- that he can return things to the way they used to be, and that it will be easy. He correctly understood that once he hooked them, his new supporters wouldn't demand specifics, and the media would eat it up as long he was flamboyant and controversial
